The Kannur Corporation celebrated the New Year with a cake cutting and celebrations ahead of the first council meeting of the year, with Mayor P. Indira calling for a fresh start and urging councilors to work together for development regardless of political differences.
The constituent meeting witnessed lively discussions on many civic topics. The mayor said that the building of dilapidated quarters in South Bazar and the surrounding land would be protected by constructing a compound wall, adding that all related matters would be finalized after discussions with representatives of all political parties. Deputy Mayor KP Thahir, who participated in the debate, emphasized the need for the identified area in South Bazaar to be cleared of garbage and secured with a wall.
Opposition councilor VK Prakashini demanded that office space be provided to the councilors at the company’s expense. She also called for maximum penalties to be imposed on those who dump waste illegally and the installation of more CCTV cameras to identify offenders.
Councilor Rijil Mamkutty pointed out that indiscriminate dumping of waste has increased the menace of stray dogs, while Councilor Umesh Kaniyankadi urged for the work to start immediately before the monsoon.
Responding to the discussions, the mayor said that a suitable decision would be taken to provide office space for the councilors and that a meeting of officials would be called first to deal with pre-monsoon hygiene measures.
