Kane Williamson has rejoined Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) for the upcoming 2025–26 SA20 season, replacing Bangladeshi spinner Taijul Islam in a major reshuffle ahead of the tournament. The return of the New Zealand captain brings experience and stability to the DSG batting line-up as the franchise looks to bounce back from a disappointing previous campaign.
Taijul Islam was signed by DSG during the mega-auction in September for ZAR 500,000 (approx. USD 28,858) and was set to become the first Bangladeshi player to feature in the SA20. However, management decided to bring back Williamson and prioritize batting and leadership depth ahead of the new season.
Williamson previously represented the Super Giants during the 2025 season where he impressed with 233 runs in eight matches at an average of 46.60 and a strike rate of 118.88, proving to be one of the team’s most reliable players. Despite his efforts, DSG endured a poor campaign and finished bottom of the table.
Previously on November 2 Williamson announced his retirement from T20 internationalsending a distinguished 13-year career in the format. He amassed 2,575 runs in 93 matches at an average of 33.4 and a strike rate of 123.1, including 18 half-centuries.
DSG SUPPORTED BY THE RETURN OF WILLIAMSON
Williamson’s return is expected to bring balance and composure to a team that struggled for consistency last season. Known for his adaptability across formats, his presence bolsters the top order and provides valuable leadership experience – a quality coach Lance Klusener will look to tap into.
Meanwhile, Taijul Islam’s omission means Bangladesh will continue to wait for their first representative in the SA20. His exclusion is understood to be a strategic move based on overseas player limits and squad composition.
The 2025–26 SA20 season begins on 26 December when Durban’s Super Giants open their campaign against MI Cape Town at Newlands. With Williamson back, DSG will look to have a stronger season and a potential playoff push.
