The Jawaharlal International Kaluor Stadium, owned by the Greater Cochin (GCDA) office, is set up to get the much needed facelift-alesp at least to look-which has long been delayed because of its tired appearance.
The beauty work to provide the stadium fresh coating has been running since April. It will probably be completed by August. Since its foundation, the stadium has only been painted once. GCDA has prepared an estimate and approved the government. Although the work was estimated at 2.50 GBP Crore, it was awarded for CRORE 1.35 GBP through competing electronic broadcasting.
Painted around 1.50 lakh square feet. The project took place after the latest issue of the Indian Super League season (ISL) in April.
Currently, the painting progresses on the inner and outer walls of the stadium and railings. The work makes steady progress despite bad weather. According to the GCDA’s statement issued, almost 50% of the work was completed.
While beautification is welcome, the stadium also needs an infrastructure upgrade. A video about roof leakage during the crowded Isl match was on the social media viral some time ago. In addition, the Senior Asian football confederation official noted last year that while the stadium has an amazing environment, it was a “disaster recipe”. Among other things, the official quoted his location in the heart of the city and the lack of infrastructure – including the security arrangements and segregation of fans, officials and players – as key concerns.
The stadium, built on 12 out of 34 acres, with a capacity of 55,000 seats, was commissioned in 1996. He was dedicated to the nation of the then vice -president of India Shankar Dayal Sharma. The first-class match between the visiting South African team and the Karnataka team won the Ranji Trophy and the Iranian trophy under the captain of the former Indian cricket team of Captain Rahul Dravid-Byl. It was played from 10 to 12 November 1996.
Since then, the stadium has hosted a number of international and first -class cricket and football matches. By the way, at this stadium against Australia in 1998, the legendary best bowling figure of Sachin Tendulkar in the one-day international-5 in 32 years was recorded against Australia in this stadium in 32 years. The stadium is now the home basis of the Isl Keral BlaSters FC.
