Jemimah Rodrigues reveals what India need to do to conquer Australia at Lord’s
Jemimah Rodrigues said India must play with aggression and look to dominate if they are to beat Australia in their Women’s World Cup T20 clash at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground on Sunday. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side head into the competition needing a win to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
India have struggled with Australia in the format, winning just 10 of the 38 completed T20Is between the teams since their first meeting in 2008. They have also not beaten Australia in a Women’s World T20 since their 17-run win in Sydney in 2020, when Poonam Yadav took four wickets.
Jemimah who struck a a brilliant century against Australia in the semi-final of the ODI World Cupsaid India could not afford to take a defensive approach against the six-time champions in London.
“The thing about Australia is that they never let you settle. They’re always attacking, they’re always putting pressure. If you want to do well against them, you can’t be defensive. You have to dominate and take the game away from them and our team relishes that challenge. We know there’s no other way. You have to match their intensity and stay ahead. That’s the mindset that works well for us,” said Jimimah in an interview with Huddle’Champions’ Jimimah.
‘AGGRESSION AND INTENT’
Jemimah, who scored a magnificent century against Australia in the ODI World Cup semi-final, said India could not afford to be defensive against the six-time champions in London. Instead, she emphasized that the team must match Australia’s intensity, take the game to them and back themselves to execute their plans.
“Shafali Verma has played a lot against them. Renuka has also played well against Australia in the past. Most of our players have good experience against them. We have faced them many times. But on the day it will all come down to execution. We just have to go out, back it up and play with that aggressive intent. If we do that, I think everything will fall into place,” Jemimah added.
India boosted their chances of reaching the semi-finals by beating Bangladesh by five wickets at Old Trafford in Manchester on Thursday. With three wins from four matches, India are second in the table with six points and a net rate of +2.268.
