Jasprit Bumrah-less India face a tough challenge from West Indies in the T20I series opener

India began the post-Asian Games phase of the T20Is against the West Indies in Lucknow on Tuesday, October 6, with one obvious question hanging over the series opener. Can Shreyas Iyer’s side succeed without Jasprit Bumrah?

Bumrah, who played a key role in India’s successful Asian Games campaign, is not part of the squad for the five-match series. His absence puts more responsibility on a pace attack that has plenty of promise but considerably less international experience.

The timing is also interesting. West Indies arrive with renewed confidence after producing a a stunning performance in the ODI final at New Chandigarh. India had already wrapped up the ODI series before the visitors bounced back, meaning the T20I series gives both teams a fresh start.

However, India will enter the competition with plenty of confidence after retaining their Asian Games T20 title. More importantly, the series provides an opportunity to test the depth of a side that looks beyond its established stars.

CAN INDIA’S YOUNG PACEERS GO FREE?

Without Bumrah, India’s pace attack suddenly looks much younger. Arshdeep Singh is the most experienced member of the group while Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav bring plenty of intrigue but are still developing at the international level. Nitish Kumar Reddy also gives India another bowling option.

Mayank’s comeback will be one of the biggest talking points. The express paceman has had to battle repeated injury setbacks, but his pace remains an obvious X-factor whenever he takes to the field. Prince, meanwhile, has taken an interesting route into the Indian set-up after initially being a net bowler.

Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel believes that opportunities like this are important for building the next generation of the team.

“Yes, it’s going to be great for Indian cricket as we continue to expand that pool, continue to give guys that experience, a taste of what it’s like to play in an Indian shirt. And also a nice opportunity for guys who have been out for a while to come back. Mayank Yadav, he’s back from injury. So yeah, I’m looking forward to seeing how he does when he gets the opportunity,” Morkelries told a press conference.

On Mayank and Prince, Morkel added: “Yeah, I think when you look at Mayank, you immediately think of his pace as an X-factor. I think for me, Prince, where he was a bowler a few years ago, he’s playing for India now. The resilience, you know, the hard work he’s put into his game to reach the international stage is admirable.”

“So to me it shows that these guys are hard-working players. You know, Mayank has had a couple of setbacks with injury, back-to-back setbacks with that. For a young player to get through that and then find himself in a situation to play for India again, it just shows his attitude.”

The challenge now will be to turn that potential into consistency, especially in the pressure stages of T20Is. Bumrah’s ability to control the game at the death has been one of India’s greatest strengths and his absence means others will have to shoulder that responsibility.

ASIAN GAMES STARS GIVE INDIA BATTING CONFIDENCE

If India have potential concerns about their speed attack, their batting will arrive in Lucknow in great spirits.

Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma were among the standout performers as India retained the Asian T20 Games title, defeating Pakistan in the final. Abhishek’s aggressive approach at the top gave India momentum, while Tilak played an important role in adding stability and power in the middle.

Ishan Kishan also entered the series with confidence after making significant contributions during India’s Asian Games campaign. Kishan was particularly impressive in the semi-final against Sri Lanka, while Sanju Samson will be looking to regain his form after struggling in the Asian Games.

Competition for places is therefore intense. Abhishek, Samson and Kishan are all capable of dismantling quality bowling attacks while Tilak has established himself as a key middle-order option. India also have Shivam Dube and other all-rounders who can add depth to the batting.

The challenge for Iyer will be to get the combination right while maintaining the aggressive approach that has become central to India’s T20 game. The focus will also be on 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who will be eager to impress and grow into his character if given the opportunity.

WEST INDIES LOOKING TO Bounce

West Indies will not lack faith. They may have lost the ODI series, but their stunning performance in the final match changed the mood of the tour. Shai Hope’s unbeaten 162 inspired the visitors to their most successful ODI chase, giving them a timely confidence boost ahead of the move to T20Is.

The visitors also added Amir Jangoo as cover for Jewel Andrew who suffered a finger injury during the third ODI. Jangoo has already enjoyed an excellent ODI series against India, which makes his inclusion another interesting draw for the T20I campaign.

West Indies have several players capable of making life difficult for India. Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford bring plenty of power to the middle order, while Romario Shepherd remains a dangerous all-round option. Meanwhile, Kamil Pooran earned his first T20I call-up after impressing strongly in the Caribbean Premier League.

Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie may also raise questions with their spin in the middle overs, while Shamar Joseph offers pace and aggression. This combination of experience, strength and emerging talent gives West Indies enough weapons to test India’s inexperienced pace attack.

But for India, the opening T20I is about more than just a series opener. It’s a chance to see if their young bowlers can step up without Bumrah and if their confident batting unit at the Asian Games can continue their momentum.

The answer could set the tone for the series, which offers India another opportunity to strengthen their bench and build towards the next phase of their T20I journey.

LUCKNOW PITCH AND WEATHER CONDITIONS

The pitch in Lucknow was not top notch in T20Is. In six matches, the average first innings score is 141, with teams batting first winning five times. So batting first could be the way forward as chasing down the target may not be easy at this location.

Tuesday should be clear with no chance of rain. Temperatures will hover around 28 degrees Celsius with a full match on the cards.
