Italy Bans Kanye West, Travis Scott Concerts Over Security Concerns, Protests | Today’s news

Two high-profile concerts by US rappers Kanye West and Travis Scott have been canceled in Italy after local authorities raised concerns about public safety, security and the potential for protests.

The performances were scheduled to take place in July at the RCF Arena in Reggio Emilia, one of Europe’s largest open-air concert venues. Scott was scheduled to headline the ‘Pulse of Gaia Festival’ on July 17, with West, now performing under the name Ye, scheduled to appear at the same venue the following day.

The decision to ban the events was announced by the prefect of Reggio Emilia, Salvatore Angieri, who said that local officials had assessed the risks involved in holding two large concerts in a short period of time. According to authorities, the expected influx of tens of thousands of spectators within 24 hours raised significant crowd management and public order concerns.

Officials also pointed to the possibility of organized demonstrations and counter-protests. Angieri said the decision followed requests from consumer protection group CODACONS and representatives of the Jewish community in Modena and Reggio Emilia, who expressed concern about Ye’s planned appearance.

What is the reason for the cancellation?

The controversy surrounding Ye stems from a series of anti-Semitic remarks and actions that have drawn widespread criticism in recent years. The rapper faced professional and commercial consequences in many countries after statements that included praising Adolf Hitler and using Nazi imagery in his public content.

As a result, several scheduled shows across Europe were either canceled or postponed. In April, British authorities denied Ye entry to the country, arguing that his presence would not be beneficial to the public welfare. Later that month, a planned concert in Marseille was postponed due to reports that the French authorities were trying to prevent the event from going ahead. Performances in Poland and Switzerland were also cancelled.

While Ye has publicly apologized for some of his past statements and linked his behavior to untreated bipolar disorder, the controversy surrounding the artist continues to influence the decisions of event organizers and public authorities.

Travis Scott’s inclusion in the canceled events also drew attention, albeit for different reasons. The rapper has faced constant questions about concert safety since the 2021 Astroworld festival tragedy in Houston, where a stampede left 10 dead and hundreds injured.

Italian authorities said the combination of two major shows featuring world-renowned artists, along with the possibility of protests and security challenges, contributed to their decision to block the concerts.
