The Federal Government of the United States advocated its arrest by student activist Columbia University Mahmoud Khalil without order. The government said the agents were feared that Khalil would escape because he said he would leave the scene.
Khalil was held in a detention center in Jena, Louisiana for six weeks. He is a legal permanent American resident and a postgraduate student who worked as a spokesman for campus activists last year during major demonstrations in Columbia against Israeli treatment of Palestinians and the Gaza War.
He was detained by federal agents in the hall of his apartment on Manhattan on March 8, the first arrest in President Donald Trump against Palestinian activists.
Trump’s administration did not blame Khalil for a crime, but claimed that he should be expelled from the country for his belief.
“Arrest was necessary”
A lawyer for the Ministry of Internal Security filed a document on Monday at the Federal Court in Newark. The ministry reported that Khalil 8 surveillance agents were announced that it could be removed from the country because its presence or activities would have serious adverse consequences of foreign policy for the United States, the Associated Press informed.
When Khalil went on the sidewalk with his wife, according to the court, he approached and identified an agent for internal security investigations.
After his wife left to obtain documents that show that Khalil had a status status, the agent asked him to cooperate while trying to verify his identity.
But Khalil “said he would not cooperate and leave the scene,” the lawyer wrote.
The Supervisory Security Agent at this point “believed that there was a flight risk and arrest is necessary,” he said.
“Never showed an order”
