ISSF World Cup: Aishwary Pratap Tomar disqualified after equipment inspection failure
India’s shooter Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar was on Friday disqualified from the men’s 50m 3-position (3P) final at the ISSF World Cup here due to an equipment-related technical problem that was flagged before the medal round. Ahead of the final, the two-time Olympian performed well, finishing fifth in the qualifiers with a solid score of 592. However, during the post-competition equipment inspection that took place before the medal round for the top 10 shooters, ISSF technicians found a fault in the weapon used by the Indian shooter.
“He has been using the same gun for the last year. In the pre-competition inspection of the equipment before the start of the tournament, the gun passed. He used the same in the qualification. “Then during the post-competition inspection, they said there was a discrepancy in the measurement of the gun. The Indian contingent appealed to the ISSF Appeals Panel and it presented a case that it had passed the pre-competition inspection of the equipment. But the ISSF did not agree and the disqualification stood,” a source from the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) told PTI.
While the technical issue prevented him from competing for a podium finish in the final, it may also affect the 25-year-old marksman’s selection for the Asian Games as scores carry weight in this blue-ribbon event. “In that case, we may have to hold selection trials,” the source said.
Tomar has established himself among India’s elite shooters over the past few years, representing India at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the Paris 2024 Games. He won the individual silver medal in the 50m Rifle 3 Position at the ISSF WC in Cairo last year after an incredible performance to equal his qualifying national record of 597/600. He successfully defended his continental title in New Delhi this year, hitting a brilliant 10.7 in his final shoot at the Asian Championships. At the last World Cup final in Doha, he won a silver medal in a revised format.
