With the ceasefire between Iran and the United States set to expire in the coming days, the prospects for a second round of talks between the two countries remain unclear. As President Donald Trump prepares to send a U.S. delegation to Pakistan, Iran has sparked “historic deep mistrust” when it comes to America.
According to reports, Vice President JD Vance has not yet gone to Pakistan. Reuters reported that US representatives plan to travel to Islamabad soon. Donald Trump said earlier in the interview that Vance, White House envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner were on their way to the talks.
Vance, Kushner and Witkoff had previously attended the first round of talks in Pakistan in Islamabad, which bore no fruit.
Meanwhile, the Iranian president said in a post on X that keeping commitments is the basis for meaningful dialogue. “Deep historical mistrust in Iran of US government behavior remains, while unconstructive and conflicting signals from US officials carry a bitter message; they seek Iranian capitulation. Iranians will not submit to violence,” he said.
“Abiding by commitments is the logic that justifies any kind of dialogue. In addition to the deep historical mistrust in Iran against the background of the behavior and performance of the US government, the unconstructive and contradictory approach of US officials in recent days carries a bitter message: they are seeking Iran’s capitulation. The Iranian people will not bow to coercion,” the Iranian president said.
Iran said earlier today that it had not yet decided to participate in a second round of talks with America.
After initial talks in Islamabad ended without an agreement earlier this month, both sides have accused the other of violating a temporary ceasefire that is now in its final days.
When asked about Iran’s participation in the next round of talks, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said: “We have no plans for another round of negotiations and no decision has been taken in this regard. The US is behaving in a way that in no way indicates seriousness in carrying out the diplomatic process.”
While Tehran has accused Washington of violating the truce by blockading Iranian ports and seizing an Iranian ship, Trump has also returned the accusation, saying it attacked ships in the key trade route through the Strait of Hormuz.
The accusations cast fresh doubt on efforts to end the war, which began with US-Israeli attacks on Iran on the morning of February 28 that killed the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
