Suryakumar Yadav may have led India to an impressive defense of the T20 World Cup title, but given his inconsistent batting form, serious questions remain over whether he will feature in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
And in this context, India’s tour of England and Ireland in June-July will be crucial for the skipper as his batting will be under scrutiny more than his captaincy.
The tour could decide whether it gets another two years until the next phase of major events in 2028, which include the Olympics and the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Suryakumar still remains the first choice for head coach Gautam Gambhir, who is eyeing a contract extension till the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia.
However, it will be interesting to see if the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee agrees with his view as the T20 captain will be pushing 38 by the time of the Olympics.
“Obviously, Surya is leading the team now. But he also has to ensure that he maintains a level of consistency in his performances as a batsman. Obviously, he will lead in the UK, but after that the discussions till 2028 could be purely based on performance,” a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
Suryakumar had a stifling year in 2025, in which his strike tally dropped to less than 120 and he failed to even make a fifty.
That changed in 2026 when he scored four half-centuries by the end of the T20 World Cup in a good knock of 160 plus.
However, in the T20 World Cup, apart from the first match against USA, Suryakumar did not put up any remarkable performances.
When he faced the big teams, his scores were 18 (against South Africa), 18 (against West Indies), 11 against England (semi-final) and 0 in the final against New Zealand.
With India boasting huge firepower in the top three and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi yet to be released, Suryakumar needs to find consistency to keep him in a strong position.
– The end
