IREL (India) Limited has advanced its proposal to mine atomic minerals along the coast of Kanniyakumari district by seeking Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) permission from the Union Environment Ministry. The proposal is currently under review.
The project is proposed to mine atomic and associated heavy minerals – such as monazite, zircon, ilmenite, rutile, sillimanite and garnet – in a 1,144-hectare coastal strip in Killiyoor taluk.
