Iran War News LIVE: US President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday (local time) that he rejected Iran’s proposal for a seven-day ceasefire to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to reporters at the White House, he said: “They made a proposal, but I rejected it,” adding: “They want to make a deal where they open the strait immediately because they are losing so badly.” He further stated that the naval blockade in Hormuz increases the economic pressure on Tehran. US and Iranian negotiators have been exploring a deal that would help Tehran reopen the Strait of Hormuz, provided Washington lifts its naval blockade of Iranian ports. The pact would resemble a memorandum of understanding the two countries struck in mid-June that led to a fragile truce that collapsed weeks later.
Scott Bessent claims he has succeeded in isolating Iran
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Saturday that he had sent envoys around the world to pressure countries to isolate Iran economically and praised new restrictions targeting Tehran’s airlines and banks. In a post on X, Bessent wrote: “At my direction, teams have been sent around the world to engage countries and demand action against the Iranian regime,” adding: “These efforts are producing results.” The US Treasury Secretary noted that both Turkey and Oman have suspended inbound flights by private carrier Mahan Air, while the UAE has suspended all flights by Iranian airlines.
The Houthis launched another attack on the Saudi coalition
On Saturday, the Iran-backed Houthis launched drones toward Riyadh, Saudi-backed coalition forces in Yemen said, adding that their air defenses intercepted two drones and a ballistic missile aimed at the southern border region of Khamis Mushait. The country’s civil defense also issued warnings of potential danger in Abha and Jazan overnight. Air raid warnings were issued in Riyadh a week ago, the first since hostilities peaked in March and April. Air defenses intercepted missiles headed for the Saudi capital.
Iran insists on diplomatic solution after Trump rejects peace plan
Iran insisted on Sunday that only diplomacy could resolve its conflict with the United States and Israel after Trump said he rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the fighting. In a post on social media, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi wrote: “Our conditions are clear and any move towards reopening the Strait of Hormuz depends on meeting these conditions,” adding: “Only a negotiated solution can get them out of this stalemate.”
