Iran, US tensions LIVE: Trump, Khamenei trade over risk of ‘regional war’, US president says ‘we’ll find out’ | Today’s news

Current information on Iran-US tensions: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has warned the United States (US) of a “regional war”, saying on Sunday: “The Americans should know that if they start a war, this time it will be a regional war”.

Khamenei said that the Americans talking about coming with warships and planes “is nothing new”. He added: “We are not initiators of war. We are not trying to oppress anyone… anyone who tries to attack or cause harm will face a decisive blow from the Iranian nation.”

Trump reacts

Following Khamenei’s warning, US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he hoped to reach an agreement with Iran. Asked about the Iranian leader’s warning, Trump said: “Of course he’s going to say that. Hopefully we’ll make a deal. If we don’t make a deal, then we’ll find out whether he was right or not.”

Trump had previously threatened military action and ordered an aircraft carrier group to be sent to the Middle East following a deadly response by Iranian authorities to anti-government protests that culminated last month.
