Punjab Kings batsman Suryansh Shedge announced his arrival in the Indian Premier League with a defiant knock of 57 runs off just 29 balls. When Punjab had their chips down against Gujarat Titans and lost four wickets for just 36 runs, Shedge put up a solid fight and steadied the innings.
On Sunday, he walked out to bat with the Punjab Kings in crisis. The batsman took his time to steady the innings before easing off against Arshad Khan and Manav Suthar to inject some much-needed acceleration.
Suryansh smashed 27 runs off Manav Suthar to help Punjab cross the 100-run mark. By the time he was dismissed in the 16th over, Punjab had reached 126 on the board.
Along with Marcus Stoinis 40 off 31, Suryansh’s maiden IPL 50 handed Punjab a fighting total on what proved to be a tricky pitch in Ahmedabad.
GT vs PBKS, IPL 2026: Update | Scorecard
Bought for just Rs 30 crore in last year’s IPL auction, Shedge has already made a name for himself in the domestic circuit. The Mumbai player is known for his ability to play wind strokes. In 2024, the right-hander’s unbeaten 36 off just 15 balls helped Mumbai chase down 175 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final.
Suryansh didn’t get many chances in the IPL before this game.
WHO IS SURYANSH SHEDGE?
Suryansh Shedge, who was bought by Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League mega auction for his base price of Rs 30,000, is one of the most exciting young players to emerge in Mumbai’s domestic circuit in recent years. Known for his fearless hitting and ability to accelerate instantly, the right-handed batsman has developed a reputation as a specialist in high-pressure situations.
Suryansh first came to national attention during the final of the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he smashed an unbeaten 36 off just 15 balls to help Mumbai chase down a target of 175. This innings highlighted his greatest strength: the ability to complete games with minimal deliveries while maintaining an extraordinarily high strike rate.
In the domestic T20 season leading up to the IPL, Shedge played nine matches, scoring 131 runs in a staggering 250-plus knock while averaging over 40. Although the run total may not stand out at first glance, his role was clearly defined as a late finisher to maximize impact in limited time.
A product of Mumbai’s competitive cricket ecosystem, Shedge has trained and learned alongside some of India’s best players, including Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav. Both played a key role in shaping his approach to T20 batting, particularly understanding match situations and preparation through simulation-based training. Last year, Shedge revealed to India Today that he often practices in short bursts of 12 to 15 balls in the nets to mimic real match scenarios, focusing on staying fit even after a period of inactivity in the dugout.
He also worked closely with coach Abhishek Nayar who helped improve his game and clarified his role as a finisher. Shedge credits Nayar with finalizing his batting technique and mental approach. Apart from that, the youngster has taken inspiration from senior pros like Ajinkya Rahane, especially in keeping calm in both success and failure.
A self-described admirer of Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes and Hardik Pandya, Shedge models his game on players who impact matches across departments and thrive under pressure.
Shedge hails from a middle-class family in Mumbai and his journey has been shaped by discipline and hard work. His mother, a former banker, quit her job to support his cricketing ambitions while his father rose through the ranks in the corporate world. Based on these values, Shedge has repeatedly emphasized his focus on effort over reward.
Now, with his breakthrough moment in the IPL, Suryansh Shedge has given a glimpse of his potential.
