IPL Qualifier 1: Away from Virat Kohli vs Shubman Gill, Bhuvneshwar Kumar vs Mohammed Siraj can decide the contest
In the season of big totals, IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 could be decided by the bowlers. Bhuvneshwar Kumar will lead the RCB line-up while Mohammed Siraj will lead the GT effort. (Agencies) TimesofIndia.com in Dharamsala: IPL 2026 has so far been defined by flat highs, towering sixes and relentless scoring. But when Gujarat Titans (GT) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) meet in Qualifier 1 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium on Tuesday, the match could ultimately hinge on the bowlers. The HPCA stadium in Dharamsala is unforgiving for bowlers due to its short boundaries. The way Gujarat Titans’ Jos Buttler and Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Tim David emptied the ballbox over the last few days by unleashing monster sixes into the stands and even out of the stadium offered a glimpse of what could happen in Qualifier 1. There is no doubt that this could be another high-scoring match. In three matches this year, teams have crossed the 200-run mark five times. The only innings that fell short ended at 199/8. 74 sixes were hit in those three games, an average of almost 25 maximums per match. The batters will be salivating at the prospect of another run-fest.It will also be another chapter in the battle between the ‘King’ – Virat Kohli – and the ‘Prince’ – Shubman Gill – who many consider to be the heir to the batting legacy of Indian cricket. The duo looked in pristine touch during their hour-long sessions on the net. With 616 runs in 13 matches, Gill is second only to opening partner Sai Sudharsan in the Orange Cap race. After a brief slump in the middle of the tournament, Kohli rediscovered his form with a scintillating century and now has 557 runs this season. But amid all the buzz around the batting line-up, it could be the bowlers who determine which way the contest goes.GT assistant coach Vijay Dahiya believes the match is even as both teams have quality bowling attacks.

“In cricket, it’s always about putting runs on the board. But ultimately you have to have a solid bowling unit and that’s there. Another important thing is consistency. If you look at both sides, the bowling units have been very consistent.“And that confidence in the bowlers, along with the confidence the captain and the management have shown in them, means you hardly see any changes on either side. I think it’s paying off,” Dahiya told reporters. With 24 wickets in 14 matches, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kagiso Rabada are the joint-highest wicket takers between the two sides, with the Indian veteran outstripping the South African in terms of economy. Not far behind is Mohammed Siraj with 17 wickets. With Josh Hazlewood (12), Jason Holder (13), Prasidh Krishna (14) and Rasikh Salam Dar (14) also in the mix, it could turn into an even match. Add spinners Rashid Khan (19) and Krunal Pandya (11) to the equation and the battle becomes even more interesting.Dahiya admitted that negotiating Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the powerplay will be key, but also warned RCB that GT has the same firepower as Siraj and Rabada in their ranks.

“As for (Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s) challenge, I think the same can be said for our opponent. If you talk about powerplay, our numbers are among the best in this tournament. So if the conditions are right, it works for both teams,” said Dahiya.RCB captain Rajat Patidar echoed the sentiment and highlighted how crucial Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s role could be when he comes up against Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill, the two highest run-scorers of the season.“Our strength is bowling. The way we play in the power bowl will be very crucial. We will look for early wickets and we have been doing that throughout the tournament. Repeating the same process again and again can make the difference. That is what Bhuvi has done and we hope to continue in the same way,” said Patidar.
Which team’s bowling attack do you think will have the biggest impact in Qualifier 1?
In a season dominated by batting headlines and soaring totals, Qualifier 1 may ultimately come down to which bowling attack can hold its nerve for a few crucial overs. On a ground built for big hits, the team whose bowlers blink last could well have sealed a direct berth in the IPL final.
