Saying that his government will strive to make Assam a ₹280, ₹2000 crore, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday (May 26, 2026) asserted that the assembly election results were a confirmation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) commitment to work for the state’s peace and prosperity.
During the Governor’s Vote of Thanks debate in the Assembly, Mr. Sarma said that the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill showed his government’s commitment to work for the rights of women belonging to the minority community.
“The number of seats in the NDA has not only reached 102, but the number of votes polled by its candidates has also increased by 15 million this time. BJP candidates got over 81.92 million votes, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) got 14 million and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) got a total of 8 million votes, crossing the NDA limit.
“The NDA swept all scheduled tribe (ST) and tea-dominated seats and won all but one scheduled caste (SC) seat,” he added.
Mr. Sarma said the election results showed that people rejected personal attacks and politicization of singer Zubeen Garg’s death. He said he kept his promise to introduce the UCC Bill in the first session of the Assembly.
“The introduction of the UCC Bill demonstrates our government’s commitment to work for the rights of women belonging to the minority community. I hope the opposition will support it,” he said.
Mr. Sarma also appreciated the decision of several Eidgah committees to abstain from cow sacrifice during Bakrid.
Referring to the issue of price rise raised by several MLAs during the discussion, the CM said that the matter has been seized by the government and steps are being taken to check it.
