In a major development for world cricket, the iconic Adelaide Oval in Australia has submitted a proposal to host an Indian Premier League (IPL) regular season match in early March next year. The idea is the brainchild of Adelaide Oval chairman Jamie Briggs and South Australia Cricket Association (SACA) chairman Will Rayner, and was recently discussed with several key stakeholders. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) must be informed about the conversation.
According to a report by SEN Cricket, a plan to host an IPL match in 2027 in Australia could be used as part of a deal with the Big Bash League (BBL) who want to travel to Chennai to play the game. Adelaide Oval is already being bid to host the T20 World Cup final in 2028.
Touted as the richest franchise league in the world, the IPL match in Australia could also be used as a vehicle for tourism. With a sizable Indian community in Australia, an IPL match would sell out within minutes and bring millions of eyeballs to the city of Adelaide. The city has already used LIV Golf and the Australian Football League (AFL) Gather Round as tourism assets.
Officials at the Adelaide Oval believe March would be the best time to host a cricket match in terms of Australia’s climate. The AFL usually starts in early March and could easily be converted into a cricket arena in 48 hours, paving the way for an IPL game.
Who’s in the mix?
Others briefed on the idea include South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, Federal Trade Representative Don Farrell and Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird. Tourism South Australia has also given its approval. Cricket Australia boss Todd Greendberg was also briefed on the proposal during the Sheffield Shield Final.
The report also said that Briggs had confirmed an interest in bringing an IPL game to Australia. BBL clubs have also expressed their interest in traveling to Chennai. However, BCCI’s interest is yet to come.
Times when IPL went outside India
If all goes according to plan, this will be the fifth time the IPL has gone overseas. The IPL first moved outside India in 2009 before another season in 2014.
