Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders head to Raipur with completely different pressures, but both teams know this clash could affect the rest of their IPL 2026 season.
RCB sit at the top of the table with 14 points and another win would all but ensure a place in the playoffs while keeping them in the hunt for a top two spot. KKR, meanwhile, are still in eighth place with nine points from 10 matches, but four straight wins have suddenly pulled them back from the brink after what looked like a dead-end campaign not long ago.
The timing of this match is also fascinating.
Raipur’s surface didn’t exactly scream batting paradise during the previous game. Even RCB struggled to chase down 167 against Mumbai Indians, needing a convulsive 73 from Krunal Pandya and a wild final over six from Bhuvneshwar Kumar to somehow get over the line.
This stagnant field now awaits two teams whose greatest strengths are currently very different.
RCB still rely heavily on batting momentum and individual players to decide the game. KKR, on the other hand, have spent their whole season rebuilding into throttling teams with spin and medium pressure.
And that puts the spotlight on two men even before the first ball: Virat Kohli and Varun Chakravarthy.
WILL VIRAT KOHLI REVERSE HIS DESTINY?
For most of IPL 2026, Kohli looked locked in another classic Kohli season.
He scored 379 runs in his first 11 matches, racked up nine straight double-figure scores and quietly became the stability behind RCB’s rise to the top of the table.
Then suddenly the last two games happened.
Ducks back to back. Combination of three balls. And now, for the first time this season, there is real buzz around Kohli’s form heading into the massive outfit.
Interestingly though, RCB actually went on to win despite Kohli’s quiet patch. Earlier versions of Bengaluru often broke down emotionally whenever Kohli failed. This season is different.
Krunal Pandya stretched them against MI. Devdutt Padikkal came on regularly. Even Tim David and Rajat Patidar had moments in the season.
Still, RCB know exactly what a locked-in Kohli will change in games like these.
KKR sure does.
Assistant coach Shane Watson admitted before the match that Kolkata’s plans still revolve around getting Kohli in early because once he settles in, he completely controls the pace of the match.
“Every team has plans against Virat Kohli because he is one of the best players in the world. But the challenge is that he knows exactly how to counter those plans,” Watson said.
Raipur’s sticky pitch could make the opening battle all the more important.
KKR spinners completely suffocated Delhi Capitals in the previous game at this point, turn the middle overs into a complete survival exercise. Delhi went from 55/1 in the over to crawling through the middle stages before Ashutosh Sharma’s late strike somewhat saved them.
If Kohli survives the new ball, RCB’s innings immediately looks calmer. If KKR strike early, the pressure will shift right back to the middle-order, which has looked a bit shaky in the last few games.
The bigger worry for Bengaluru could actually be skipper Rajat Patidar. After a great start to the tournament, Patidar managed only one fifty-plus score and one twenty-plus score in the last six innings.
Against KKR’s spin attack, RCB probably need one of Kohli or Patidar to generate the right knock.
VARUN CHAKRAVARTHY’S ABSENCE MAKES KKR SWEAT
KKR’s entire revival has been built on their bowling attack rediscovering rhythm.
And no player symbolized this turnaround more than Varun Chakravarthy.
After losing a wicket in the first three matches of IPL 2026 in Kolkata, the enigmatic spinner suddenly exploded back into form with 10 wickets in the next four games, including a match-winning spell against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
But ahead of the RCB clash, KKR have a nagging worry hanging over them.
Varun was spotted wearing braces and using crutches after the win over Delhi Capitals, which immediately raised concerns about his fitness ahead of one of the biggest games of their season.
Watson admitted that the franchise is still hopeful, but did not give a clear confirmation of his availability.
And frankly, KKR can’t afford to lose him right now.
Because this bowling unit works best when Narine and Varun push the teams together through the middle overs. Throw in the resurgence of Anukul Roy and support from bowlers like Vaibhav Arora and Kartik Tyagi and suddenly Kolkata have become one of the toughest bowling attacks to come up against.
Another interesting selection conversation remains around Matheesha Pathirana.
Despite being fit and available, the Sri Lankan fast bowler still can’t break into KKR’s settled combination. Watson admitted that Pathiran’s quality gives the team depth, but Kolkata’s balance right now makes it difficult to squeeze him into the playing XI.
That alone probably explains how much confidence KKR currently have in their bowling line-up.
WILL RCB CONTINUE TO SUPPORT ROMARIO OČÁK?
One of the most embarrassing conversations around RCB right now revolves around Romario Shepherd.
The West Indian all-rounder has had his share of moments this season, but concerns are growing whether RCB can continue to carry his inconsistency into the play-off stage.
Against Mumbai, Shepherd managed just 4 off 11 balls during a tense chase and almost dragged RCB into trouble before Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s late heroics saved them.
His struggle against spin is also increasingly visible.
Earlier in the season against Lucknow Super Giants, Shepherd failed to complete the chase against Digvesh Rathi in the final overs. With KKR expected to throw Narine, Varun and Anukul in succession, this match could be very uncomfortable for RCB.
Even with the ball, Shepherd leaked a lot, despite picking up wickets. His economy rate is close to 12 this season, making him one of the most expensive players in the tournament.
This naturally brings up the Jordan Cox question again.
The England batsman spent most of IPL 2026 warming the bench despite arriving with strong T20 numbers and a reputation built through The Hundred. If RCB want more batting control against spin-heavy attacks, Cox could soon become a real option.
But the bigger question remains whether Bengaluru will come calling before the playoffs.
RCB VS KKR: PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
The equation is now fairly simple for both teams.
RCB are one win away from almost confirming playoff qualification. With a healthy net rate of +1.103, Bengaluru are also serious contenders for the top two spots, which could be massive during the knockout stages.
KKR’s journey is far more stressful.
The defending champions have nine points from 10 games and realistically need to win all four of their remaining games to stay alive in the play-offs. Scoring 17 points would almost certainly keep them in the top four conversation.
However, a defeat in Raipur would once again bring Kolkata dangerously close to elimination territory.
Which is why this game feels emotionally much bigger for KKR than it probably is for RCB.
