Mumbai Indians kept their slim playoff hope alive with a thrilling six-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants, powered by Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton’s explosive opening stand. Despite the win, MI remain ninth and need a perfect four wins from their remaining matches to have any chance of qualifying. Every game from there is basically an elimination game. Net Run Rate can come into play, but only if they win all four. Rohit Sharma and the red-hot Ryan Rickelton had to keep Mumbai Indians alive. Chasing down 229 against Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede, MI rode Rohit’s 84 (44) and Rickelton’s 83 (32) to a stunning six-wicket win – only their third of the season. A 143-run opening stand flipped the script, but the bigger picture hasn’t changed much. With just six points from 10 games, MI remain deep in trouble and this emphatic chase only marginally revives their fading playoff hopes.

MI is having an inconsistent season
MI’s season was defined by inconsistency as well as a lot of injuries. Their last five results were: W, L, L, L, W. Even in victory, structural problems persist. Against LSG, they conceded 228 on the flat track, with the bowlers missing 16 sixes. Prior to this, defeats were often marked by single bowling collapses or an inability to close out games under pressure.
Big problem: Broken bowling unit and poor batting SKY and Varma
Mumbai’s biggest worry is not their table position but their bowling. They scored 1,916 runs in 182.3 overs, one of the worst defensive records of the season. Even their spearhead Jasprit Bumrah struggled for rhythm, going 0/45 in the last game and leaking extras, a rare drop from one of the best in the business. The opponents repeatedly dominated MI in the Powerplay and death overs. LSG reached 90/1 in six overs and still posted 228 despite a mid-innings slowdown. Apart from Allah Ghazanfar, who is ranked 7th in wickets this season (IPL 2026 Purple Cap), not a single MI bowler is even in the top 40 wickets list this season.Another big concern is the form of their middle-order duo of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilka Varma. SKY has managed 195 runs at an average of just 19.50 in the 10 matches he has played, while Varma is slightly better with 204 runs in 10 matches, but almost half of the runs have come in a single match (101* vs GT). In all other games he has managed 5 single digit scores with scores of 37, 20, 14 and 11. Apart from Ryan Rickelton who is ranked 6th in runs scored this season (IPL 2026 Orange Cap), no MI player features in the top 20 list of most runs scored this season.

Upcoming IPL 2026 fixtures for Mumbai Indians
- May 10 vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Raipur) – Must win against two top teams
- May 14 vs. Punjab Kings (Dharamsala) – a tough test against the table leaders
- May 20 vs Kolkata Knight Riders (Kolkata) – direct rivalry clash, high pressure
- May 24 vs Rajasthan Royals (Mumbai) – last league game, likely knock-out scenario
Every game from there is basically an elimination game. Net Run Rate can come into play, but only if they win all four. Mumbai Indians are not out but hanging on by a thread. Four wins in four games is the bare minimum and even that may not guarantee qualification given their poor NRR. With a skimpy bowling unit and inconsistent form, MI need a near-perfect run to stay alive. The fight has begun, but time is running out.
