Chennai Super Kings’ renaissance in the second half of the Indian Premier League 2026 season was brought to a screeching halt by Mitchell Marsh on Friday. Playing at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, Marsh blasted CSK for a quickfire 90 off 38 balls, dealing a massive blow to their playoff hopes.
CSK, who have combined for the last four spots this season, lost to Lucknow Super Giants by 7 wickets on 15th May. Defending 187 runs on a pitch that offered decent help to the fast bowlers, CSK were overwhelmed by Marsh’s extraordinary attack in the powerplay.

After starting cautiously in the first couple of overs, Marsh exploded in the fifth over of the innings, smashing Anshul Kamboj for four consecutive sixes. Once he broke free, the Australian, who reached his half-century in just 21 balls, was unstoppable.
Marsh rode the rebound in Ekana, which perhaps made him feel at home. Marsh fired and pulled the fast bowlers at will, dominating the wicket from the word go where the batsmen struggled with lackluster deliveries. The CSK bowlers tried to vary the length and pace, but nothing seemed to faze the Australian in his brutal counter-attack.
Marsh received solid support from Josh Inglis, who was content to play second fiddle to his compatriot. While Inglis rotated the strike smartly, the partnership crossed the 100-run mark in just the eighth over of the innings.
CSK fans finally got some relief in the 12th over when Inglis miscued a slower ball from Mukul Choudhary. Inglis, who made 36 off 32 balls, attempted a big shot but was caught at deep cover.
CSK’s joy was doubled, albeit a bit late, as they struck twice in consecutive deliveries. Nicholas Pooran, facing his first ball, hit a crisp straight that brushed Mukul’s fingertips and crashed into the stumps at the non-striker’s end, dismissing Marsh for a sensational 90 off just 38 deliveries.
After those two back-to-back wickets, CSK were able to stem the flow of runs, even equalizing with another wicket from Abdul Samad, but by then the damage was simply done.
CSK’S CHANCE FOR THE PLAYOFFS
The result has major implications for ČSK, which was hoping to make it to the playoffs. Defeat will significantly complicate their qualification chances. Next up will be SunRisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans, two teams that are firmly in contention for the playoffs this season.
If CSK manage to win both the matches and results elsewhere go in their favour, especially against Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals, they could still make it to the playoffs.
