The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has directed the Principal Secretary, General Education, to take steps to frame legislation to regulate the use of mobile phones and screens by children below 18 years of age. A high-level committee comprising chief secretaries and secretaries of various departments and the state police chief has been proposed to take up the initiative. It is imperative that the government draft laws on age limits to regulate children’s screen time, the Commission said.
The commission, comprising chairman KV Manoj Kumar and member Shajesh Bhaskar P, initiated the suo motu proceedings based on newspaper reports of an incident at a school in Anakkara, Palakkad, last year. Other related complaints were also considered.
