An Indian-origin individual has been declared a fugitive in the US after allegedly defrauding Medicare of $93 million by submitting false requests for genetic tests.
The Department of Health and Human Services said Khadeer Khan Mohammed allegedly submitted or directed others to submit requests for laboratory genetic testing that were not eligible for reimbursement.
During the course of the conspiracy, Mohammed used American Premier to submit approximately $93 million in allegedly fraudulent Medicare claims, resulting in payments of at least $65 million, the Office of Inspector General, Department of Health and Human Services, said.
In just 10 days in 2023, Medicare paid approximately $13 million for suspected fraudulent claims.
According to the Ministry of Health, Muhammad is believed to be in Hyderabad, India.
From approximately August 2023 to October 2024, in the Northern District of Texas and elsewhere, Muhammad allegedly used physicians’ personally identifiable information, without their knowledge or consent, to apply for genetic testing for recipients with whom the physicians had no treatment relationship.
“These tests were not ordered by doctors and were not used in the care of the beneficiaries,” the Ministry of Health said.
