India-US trade talks progress as Goyal, Greer assess progress amid push for deal | Today’s news
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday held a series of meetings with the visiting US delegation led by its Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to review the progress of the ongoing trade talks between India and the US and discuss ways to deepen bilateral economic ties.
The meetings come amid ongoing efforts by both sides to advance talks on a proposed bilateral trade deal.
“We reviewed the progress of the ongoing trade discussions between India and the US and explored ways to further deepen our economic partnership,” Goyal said in a post on X. He said he appreciated Greer’s leadership and “the continued efforts of both teams in advancing our discussions in a constructive and forward-looking manner.”
The talks followed talks between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2025. Greer’s visit comes amid efforts by both countries to deepen economic ties and address market access issues through a comprehensive trade pact.
The first glimmer of an emerging deal came in a joint India-US statement issued on February 6, 2026, following a meeting between Trump and Modi a year earlier.
Earlier on Tuesday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also met with Greer. According to the Ministry of Finance, the two sides exchanged views on strengthening bilateral trade and economic cooperation, focusing on new avenues of growth and expanding business engagement between the two countries.
