India tour of England, Zimbabwe: Prince Yadav and Bishnoi named injury replacement
India’s white-ball plans took a major hit after their bowling department suffered a double injury during the closing stages of the Twenty20 international series against England at Trent Bridge. Fast bowler Harshit Rana and spinner Varun Chakaravarthy were both sidelined with hamstring injuries, prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to name Prince Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi as immediate replacements for the upcoming England and Zimbabwe assignments.
The injury occurred during a grueling third T20I clash in Nottingham. Rana reported a sudden onset of discomfort in his right hamstring. Subsequent diagnostic scans revealed a Grade 1 hamstring tear, automatically ruling him out of the upcoming three-match One-Day International series against England. Rana will return to India to report directly to the BCCI Center of Excellence (COE) for structured rehabilitation and evaluation.
In a mirror bout of misfortune, mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy suffered a similar fate during the same match when he experienced sudden discomfort in his left hamstring. His MRIs showed a more serious diagnosis and confirmed a grade 2 hamstring injury. On the advice of medical specialists, Chakaravarthy has been withdrawn from the upcoming T20I tour of Zimbabwe. Like Rana, he is ready to head straight to the COE to begin the rebuilding process.
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee was quick to fill in the gaps. Prince Yadav was given a big opportunity, named as Rana’s replacement in the ODI squad against England. The Delhi fast bowler has been coming off a strong run of late, catching the selectors’ eye with a 16-wicket campaign for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL before featuring in the recent home ODIs against Afghanistan and the T20I in England.
Meanwhile, seasoned spinner Ravi Bishnoi takes over from Chakaravartha for the T20Is in Harare. Bishnoi’s recall to the team comes just days after he was dropped from the playing eleven for the third T20I, a direct result of a dreadful outing at Old Trafford where he conceded 60 runs in four boundary overs.
The team’s adjustments are coming to a critical juncture. Captained by Shubman Gill and featuring veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the England ODI team will be looking to find their rhythm quickly ahead of the first match at Edgbaston. Shreyas Iyer will serve as Gill’s vice-captain for the 50-over stage before taking over the captaincy exclusively for the T20I team traveling to Zimbabwe later this month.
India will be looking to end their losing streak on their tour of Great Britain. On Saturday, England romped to the top of the T20I rankings with a 4-0 series win over India.
