The Marathahalli police arrested a 22-year-old delivery driver for allegedly forcing his way into a woman’s flat on the pretext of using the toilet and then flashing her.
The accused has been identified as Vijay Mallikarjun Kamath (22). He was arrested in connection with the incident, which came to light after a survivor shared her ordeal and video footage of the confrontation on social media, sparking widespread outrage.
According to the woman’s complaint, a delivery manager arrived at her apartment to deliver a package and asked for permission to use the restroom. She refused, explaining that she lived alone, and asked him to use the washroom in the house next door instead. However, the defendant ignored her refusal, took off his shoes and forced his way into the apartment while trying to close the door.
Believing that he might be facing a real emergency, the woman allowed him to continue. She later claimed that after she came out of the washroom attached to her bedroom, the delivery driver winked at her and left her “shocked, humiliated, humiliated and completely unsafe” in her own home.
Fearing for her safety, the woman turned on her cell phone camera, left the apartment door open and stayed near the entrance to escape or seek help if necessary. She then confronted the accused and told him that she would file a complaint. The man allegedly fled the building through the stairwell while she followed him toward the elevator and recorded the interaction on video.
In a post on social media, the woman questioned whether e-commerce companies do adequate vetting of delivery staff and said she was traumatized by the incident.
Based on her complaint, the Marathahalli police registered a case and subsequently arrested the accused. He was booked under Sections 75 (sexual harassment), 79 (word, gesture or act with intent to insult the modesty of a woman) and 329(2) (criminal offence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
