India in men’s freestyle relay medal race, Mohanty finishes 15th in gymnastics final

India enjoyed another encouraging day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday as the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team qualified for the final while gymnast Tapan Mohanty finished 15th in the men’s artistic gymnastics all-around final.

India’s quartet of Dhakshan Shashikumar, Aneesh Sunil Kumar Gowda, Aryan Nehra and Srihari Nataraj secured a place in the medal contention after finishing third in Heat 2 in 7:39.48, securing a place among the eight fastest teams in both heats.

Dhakshan gave India a solid start as he swam the opening leg in 1:53.31 to pass it in fourth place. Aneesh then produced one of India’s strongest parts of the race, clocking 1:53.73 to propel the team to third at the halfway mark and keep qualification firmly within reach.

Aryan Nehra completed the third leg in 1:56.64 as India slipped to fourth, but the quartet remained well in contention heading into the anchor leg. Srihari Nataraj then produced a composed finish to swim 1:55.80 to lift India back to third place before the finish line.

The Indian team crossed the line behind Australia and England in Heat 2, with their combined time proving enough to secure a place in the final.

A MEDAL AWAITS

India will return to the pool for the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay final at 1:56am IST, with the medal ceremony scheduled for 2:26am IST.

The Indian quartet, who put in a confident performance in the heats, will now take on the strongest Commonwealth swimming nations and have a chance to fight for a place on the podium.

MOHANTY ENDS 15

Tapan Mohanty ended his campaign in the men’s artistic gymnastics all-around final in 15th place after scoring 70.100 on six apparatus.

The Indian gymnast scored 11,850 on floor, 9,500 on pommel horse, 12,000 on rings, 12,700 on vault, 12,450 on bars and 11,600 on bars.

Mohanty had the highest score on vault, earning a 12.700, while he also impressed on bars with a 12.450. He received an 11.850 on the floor exercise despite being given a 0.1 point penalty.

Despite finishing outside the medal positions, Mohanty put in a steady performance in all six events against a strong Commonwealth field to end his campaign with a respectable show.

With the relay team advancing to the finals later on Sunday, India will now hope to add another medal in Glasgow after Rishikanta Singh kicked off the country’s weightlifting campaign with a silver medal earlier in the day.
