Imran Khan’s sister Dr Uzma Khan was finally able to meet the jailed former Pakistani prime minister on Tuesday (December 2) after more than a month of unannounced ban. The approach came hours after large crowds of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters gathered outside Adiala jail amid mounting rumors about Khan’s health and well-being.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Dr Uzma said her brother appeared physically stable, but claimed he was facing severe psychological pressure in custody.
“Imran Khan’s health is absolutely fine. He is angry. He said that he is being subjected to mental torture and that Asim Munir is responsible for all this,” she said, referring to Pakistan’s army chief.
Speculation on Imran Khan’s safety
The prolonged ban on family visits has sparked intense speculation on social media, with some supporters questioning whether the 73-year-old PTI founder is alive.
Imran Khan has been jailed since August 2023 in several legal cases.
Security Lockdown outside Adiala Prison
The Punjab government has deployed the entire Rawalpindi police force along Adiala Road to prevent PTI demonstrations. In both Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Section 144 – prohibiting the gathering of four or more people – remains in force.
Officials said an eight-kilometer stretch around the prison was closed.
“The eight kilometer stretch has been completely sealed off… residents have to show their identity card,” a Punjab government official told PTI.
PTI reaction
The PTI welcomed the government’s decision but questioned whether the approach would be maintained.
“Even though the government has allowed Dr. Uzma to see her brother in prison today, we will see if the government keeps its commitment,” the party said.
A group of lawyers also protested outside the Islamabad High Court, accusing the government of keeping Khan in solitary confinement.
Imran Khan’s family demands proof of life
Imran Khan’s son Kasim Khan had earlier demanded that the government provide evidence that his father was alive.
Imran Khan’s sisters also warned that if any harm comes to him, those responsible “will not be spared Pakistanis here or abroad”.
