New Delhi: Heavy rainfall is likely to continue in several parts of India for the next seven days, with the Met office predicting very heavy rainfall in parts of Andaman and Nicobar Islands on September 18 and Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in the coming week.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to experience heavy rainfall in some parts on 17 September and again during 19-22 September, while rainfall is likely to be fairly widespread to widespread during this period. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a rare spell of very heavy rainfall on September 18, making the islands one of the key areas to watch during the week.

In North India, moderate to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and adjoining areas on September 17. Punjab is also likely to experience widespread rainfall during the same period, while East Rajasthan may witness similar conditions on September 17. Other parts of northwest India are likely to witness isolated to scattered showers with thundershowers.

Precipitation activity is also expected to increase over central India. West Madhya Pradesh is likely to experience moderate to widespread rainfall on September 18-19, while East Madhya Pradesh could witness similar conditions during September 17-18. Chhattisgarh is expected to experience widespread rains during the 19th-22nd. September, with occasional heavy precipitation probably during the 20th-22nd September.

East India is likely to remain wet throughout the week. Gangetic West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to experience moderate to widespread rainfall from September 17 to 22. Odisha is likely to experience widespread rainfall during September 19-22, with isolated heavy rainfall forecast during September 18-20. Bihar may experience isolated heavy rainfall on 17-18 September, while sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are likely to experience heavy rainfall on 17 September.

Northeast Arunachal Pradesh is expected to receive moderate to widespread rainfall on September 17, with some parts experiencing heavy rainfall on both days. Assam and Meghalaya may witness isolated heavy rains on 17 and 19 September. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura may also experience heavy rainfall on September 19.

In western India, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over Gujarat during 17-19 September and Saurashtra & Kutch on 17 September. Parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat are expected to receive intermittent rain till September 22.

South Kerala and Mahe are likely to experience widespread rains on September 17-18, while coastal Karnataka may experience widespread rains during September 20-22. Telangana and parts of Karnataka are also likely to see increased rainfall activity during the 19th-22nd. September.

Meanwhile, India’s cumulative rainfall during the southwest monsoon season remained 15% below normal till September 16, with the country receiving 682 mm of rain against the normal 801.5 mm for the period since June 1, according to IMD data.

Meanwhile, extremely heavy rainfall (≥ 30 cm) was recorded over Sikkim during the last 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Wednesday. Very heavy rainfall (12-20 cm) was also recorded over Kutch and Assam. Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) was also recorded over Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, Rayalaseema, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.
