T20 World Cup: Gautam Gambhir, Suryakumar Yadav after Team India’s win
“I think I played cricket with Gautim bhai for four years and I knew how he thinks. He takes two steps, I take two and we meet somewhere in the middle,” said Suryakumar, describing the dynamic that has guided India’s T20 side since the transition to the 2024 World Cup.

Should the coach be actively involved with the players in difficult phases?
Clarity between captain and coach meant remarkably smooth decision-making, according to the captain.READ ALSO: ‘Stop celebrating milestones’: Gambhir’s powerful message after India’s T20 World Cup triumph“Since we started working together from the Sri Lanka series, I don’t remember ever having an argument over a player – whether we should play a particular player or not,” he revealed. “We’ve both always been interested in seeing the team win and figuring out how we can put players in a position that’s beneficial to the team.”This shared vision, Suryakumar explained, allowed the team management to work with minimal selection debates. “Many times we talked about the team and the playing eleven or fifteen and the 14 players were almost always the same. If the success rate is so high, you don’t have to discuss it so much.”For Suryakumar, management also means investing time in players at difficult stages – a philosophy inspired by his predecessor Rohit Sharma. He pointed to teammates like Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma who overcame lean patches and played a key role during the tournament.“When somebody’s not doing well, you try to spend time with them, take them out to dinner, talk to them,” he said. “These are the players who will do something special for you at the right time. The captain also emphasized the importance of openness in the dressing room. “Freedom of speech in the dressing room is very important. If you don’t listen to everyone, you can’t bring everyone together and win a trophy.”Ultimately, Suryakumar believes that being honest with yourself is at the heart of lasting success. “You fail more times than you succeed in sports,” he said. “But you have to be true to yourself – you can’t deceive the man in the mirror.”
