The stakes couldn’t be higher. India are the defending T20 World Champions, after lifting the trophy in the previous editionand now they are on the verge of achieving something no team has ever done before.
If they beat New Zealand on March 8, India will become the first team in history to win back-to-back T20 World Cup titles. They have already made history by becoming the first team to reach back-to-back T20 World Cup finals, but a win on Sunday would put them in a class of their own.
Another record is within reach. No team has ever won the T20 World Cup on home soil and with the final being played in front of the expected capacity of the largest cricket stadium in the world, India have the opportunity to rewrite the history books in front of their own fans.
As always, New Zealand will not be an easy opponent. They have a reputation for punching above their weight in knockout cricket and will arrive in Ahmedabad with nothing to lose and everything to gain.
But in India, the stars seem to be aligning. They are at home, in front of their own fans, in a venue that can hold over 130,000 spectators. The team is in form, the crowd will be behind them and the history is there.
Ahmedabad is ready. India is ready. Sunday can’t come soon enough.
