Hockey World Cup: Belgium break Indian hearts in shootout as Harmanpreet’s team finish eighth

Belgium beat India (AP photo) India’s spirited contest ended in heartbreak as Belgium prevailed in a thrilling penalty shoot-out after the two sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in regulation time. India had the better start and took the lead through Abhishek whose sixth minute field goal gave the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Belgium responded with sustained pressure and earned several penalty corners, but India’s defense held firm.The match changed significantly in the second period. Roman Duvekot restored the balance for Belgium with a close-range finish before Hugo Labouchere put them ahead with a powerful drive from a penalty corner. Belgium went into half time 2-1.India came out strongly after the break and equalized through captain Harmanpreet Singh who converted a penalty corner with a superb header in the 31st minute. Belgium challenged the wicket with a review but the decision went to India.The third quarter remained fiercely contested, with Belgium applying the pressure and India creating opportunities of their own. Despite Belgium having more possession, India maintained their form and leveled the scores at 2-2 in the final quarter.

Belgium strike again, India refuse to give up

Belgium regained the lead in the 47th minute when Nicolas de Kerpel fired home a goal. The goal was flagged for possible obstruction, but the original decision was upheld and Belgium went 3–2 up. India suffered another blow when veteran Manpreet Singh took a bat to the face and left the field for medical treatment.With time running out, India withdrew their wicketkeeper in favor of another fielder and threw the numbers forward in search of an equaliser. Their gamble paid off dramatically.Harmanpreet struck again in the 60th minute, finding the target to make it 3-3 and force a penalty shootout.

Gunfight drama ends India’s hopes

The shootout got off to a disastrous start for India. Harmanpreet’s first attempt was saved by Belgian keeper Vincent Vanasch after the Indian skipper appeared to pause and wait for the whistle. Belgium converted their opening try, while Vanasch then denied Sukhjeet Singh as well.India have finally found their rhythm. Shilanand Lakra opened India’s account before Belgium restored their advantage. Dilpreet Singh then converted to make the shootout level at 2-2.Belgium went back in front with a penalty after Mohith was penalized for a foul on Van Dessel, with Hendrickx converting. India stayed alive when Abhishek scored to make it 3-3.The decisive moment came when Duvekot found the Belgium goal. India accepted the recommendation in an attempt to overturn the decision, but the call stood.So Belgium won the shootout and after an extraordinary fight ended India’s valiant fight to finish 8th in this World Cup.
