The green water tanker service to provide non-potable water treated at sewage treatment plants (STPs) was launched by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Sunday (November 1). This was one of the measures to be put in place to conserve natural resources in the face of potential drinking water shortages in urban areas of Telangana under the influence of El Nino.

In the first phase, treated water from 11 WWTPs will be delivered through 21 green tanks. A total of 100 tankers were registered. First priority would be government departments, parks and landscaping. It will also be supplied for construction site and industrial works, said the board’s managing director Ashok Reddy.

Special officers were appointed to monitor water quality, operation at pumping stations, allocation of tankers and supply. Instructions were issued for the tankers to be painted green with the warning “STP TREATED WATER – NOT DRINKING” clearly displayed.
