Here We Go: Tottenham land Tonali, spend over $300m in summer

Tottenham Hotspur continued their extraordinary summer rebuild on Monday by signing Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a club record fee of £100 million (US$133 million). The deal will push the Spurs’ off-season spending past the $300 million mark as Roberto De Zerbi’s rebuild gathers momentum.

The move is Tottenham’s second transfer-record signing in five days, underscoring the extent of an aggressive squad overhaul following two consecutive underwhelming Premier League campaigns.

“People were saying four or five clubs,” Tonali said in a Tottenham statement, referring to reported interest from other Premier League sides, as quoted by the AP. “There was only one.

Tottenham’s spending spree represents a dramatic shift in policy at a club historically known for cautious investment in the transfer market. De Zerbi’s arrival, combined with changes in the management structure and a strategic push for immediate competitiveness, has precipitated one of the most ambitious overhauls in the Premier League.

“I chose Tottenham because of the project, the manager and my family situation,” added Tonali. “It felt like the right move at the right time in my career.

TOTTENHAM’S REBUILDING OFFERS HEAT

Tonali is the latest high-profile signing in a window that has already seen Mateus Fernandes arrive from West Ham for £85m, along with defensive signings Jan Paul van Hecke, Marco Senesi and former Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson. The Spurs hierarchy believe an overhaul of the team is necessary after finishing 17th in back-to-back seasons.

The club’s management openly acknowledged the need for structural change after the departure of Daniel Levy and a reassessment of the transfer strategy. Chairman Peter Charrington previously admitted the club had “discovered some uncomfortable truths”. promised permanent investment in more windows to support the long-term De Zerbi project.

Newcastle, meanwhile, continue to overhaul their squad following Tonali’s departure, in what ranks as the club’s biggest ever sale. Bazoumane Toure has already been brought in from Hoffenheim in a £43m deal, with the 20-year-old winger believed to be part of their long-term attacking rebuild following departures and a reshuffle.

Tonali’s move caps a turbulent but productive spell at Newcastle, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders despite serving a 10-month ban for betting offences. His arrival at Tottenham is expected to further intensify competition in a squad now being rapidly restructured for immediate improvement rather than gradual progression.
