Haldia port in West Bengal designated as an immigration station

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has designated the Haldia seaport in West Bengal as an immigration station, the ministry announced on Monday (June 22, 2026).

There are currently 40 immigration ports along the Indian coast and Haldia will be the 41st entry on the list.

Built in 1968 to handle cargo from the Port of Kolkata, the Haldia Dock Complex began international operations after the port was commissioned here in 1977.

The MHA announcement is likely aimed at boosting maritime trade and tourist movement from the eastern port. The move comes days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in West Bengal for the first time.

Earlier on May 29, three seaports in Gujarat – Dahej, Sikka and Tuna Tekra were designated as immigration stations.
