
In a large step, the Madras High Court said on Friday that it is not necessary for a woman to obtain her husband’s permission and sign a signature before applying for a passport in front of the office.
Justice N Anand Venkatesh declared a decision and at the same time loaded a female petition looking for authorities to issue a new passport without launching her husband’s signature in time bindings.
“It is not necessary for the wife to obtain the permission of her husband and take a signature before he’s in front of the Passport before the Office,” Judge Venkatesh quoted.

In her petition, the woman stated that despite the ongoing divorce case filed by her husband after their marriage in 2023, the regional passport office (RPO) refused to process her application for a passport submitted in April 2025.

The Madras High Court also noted that forcing a wife to obtain her husband’s signature when the relationship between the parties in Doldrumy was, it was like to ask the woman to fulfill the impossibility, informed live law.
“The practice of the spouse’s permission to apply for a passport is not good for society that moves towards the emancipation of women. This practice is nothing but male supremaacism,” the judge noted in the hearing of the case.
The judge also noted that the insistence of RPO shows the thinking of society in the treatment of women who were married, as if they were cottages belonging to her husband.
Passport is to be released in four weeks
Justice Anand Venkatesh ordered RPO to process a passport request and issue a passport on her name to satisfy the other requirements. This process will be completed within four weeks, the judge added.
