After a brief respite, the temperatures at Munnar Hill station started dropping again. On Thursday morning, Chundavurrai near Munnar recorded a low of 1°C.
Data from the United Planters’ Association of South India (UPASI) Tea Research Foundation shows temperatures of 3°C in Silent Valley and UPASI headquarters at Nallathanni in Munnar. Other areas, including Devikulam, Letchmi and Sevenmallay, recorded 4°C, while the R&D center in Mattupetty saw a drop to 5°C.
The current cold spell began on Monday with initial readings showing lows of 3°C in Devikulam, Silent Valley and Chundavurrai. Officials noted that the drop follows a nearly 20-day gap in extremely cold weather in the region.
Earlier, in the second week of December, Munnar experienced a sub-zero period with temperatures dropping to -1°C. This cooling has generated a massive influx of tourists and stakeholders are now hoping for a similar boost. With the cold coming back, the tourism sector is expecting increased arrivals during the last week of January until February.
