The Kerala Forest Department has approached the Kochi Corporation to ensure quick access of snake rescue volunteers to the Vypeen-Fort Kochi ro-ro ferry service.
The Deputy Conservator of Forests applied for special permission to allow volunteers to bypass the regular queue and get direct entry into the ro-ro service in view of the emergency nature of their work. Venomous snakes like the Russell’s viper are often seen in the Kochi area.
The volunteers are mostly from Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Palluruthy, Vypeen and Thoppumpady regions. The company’s board will consider the request at its next meeting.
The snakes to be rescued are safely packed and kept either at the shelter in Kochi or handed over to the Social Forestry Department at Edappally.
