A goal, a celebration and a broken heart
Balogun looked destined to be the hero after giving the United States the lead just before halftime. He had already seen one attempt ruled out for offside before finishing calmly after Malik Tillman’s pass was kindly deflected into his path. The forward celebrated with his version of NBA legend LeBron James’ iconic “Silencer” celebration, a moment that even prompted a reaction from James on social media. However, the match took a dramatic turn in the 64th minute.Balogun challenged Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic for the ball and unfortunately stepped on his ankle. Brazilian referee Raphael Claus initially allowed play to continue, but after a VAR review he upgraded the decision to a straight red card.

USA furious at red card
The ban means Balogun will automatically miss the Round of 16 match against Belgium.“Honestly, it’s unfortunate,” captain Christian Pulisic said after the game. “It just seems so harsh that we got it. He’s done so much for us and now we’ve helped him. If he has to miss another game, it’s ridiculous for something like that.”

If the intention is to harm an opponent, fine, I understand. But it never was. It was a normal action in football that you fight for the ball and your feet land.”Despite the setback, the Americans held firm with 10 men before Tillman sealed the victory with a stunning late free kick to secure the USA’s advance while Balogun watched from the sidelines. The striker’s suspension now leaves Mauricio Pochettino with a major selection dilemma ahead of Monday’s round of 16 tie against Belgium.
