Sergeant of the US Army shot and injured five fellow soldiers in Fort Stewart on Wednesday, led by a short lock on one of the largest military foundations in the country. The shooter, identified as Sergeant Quornelius Radford, 28, was a colleague of the soldiers and was in custody within minutes, the officials said.
The shooting took place shortly before 11:00 at 2nd. The installation, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is home to the third infantry division of the army.
Soldiers appreciated the quick action
Brig. Gene. John Lubas said that Radford used a personal pistol-no military weapon-and started fire in the area where he worked. The shooting motif remains unclear.
Lubas attributed to other soldiers on the spot for immediate solutions and disarmament of Radford, thus preventing further damage.
“These soldiers undoubtedly prevented other victims or injuries,” he said.
Victims in a stable state
All five injured soldiers were originally treated at the base before transport to the Winn Army community hospital, the officials said. Some were later transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, the primary traumatic center of the region. Hospital officials did not disclose the number of patients or the extent of their injuries, but military resources confirmed that all victims are in a stable state.
Short lock
The fortress was located on locking at approximately 11:04. and reopened just an hour later after Radford was detained until 11:35.
Federal investigation
The FBI joined the investigation to help military authorities in determining what led to the attack. Meanwhile, White House and Pentagon officials confirmed that President Donald Trump and Defense Minister Pete Hegseth were informed about the incident. The FBI was present in Fort Stewart to supervise the investigation coordination, said Deputy Director Dan Bongino.
Almost 9,000 live in Fort Stewart
Fort Stewart is located in Hinesville, about 225 miles (362 km) southeast of Atlanta and about 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Savannah. From the census in 2020, nearly 9,000 people live on the base.
The base supports about 15,000 army staff with active services, along with thousands of military pensioners, family members and civilians.
