Farmers complain of crop loss due to drought in GR drought-excluded taluks
Official rainfall data from automatic weather stations shows 94% of normal rainfall, leaving Mudkhed and Mukhed taluks in Nanded district of Marathwada region off the drought-hit list, while wells in the same banana-growing belt are drying up, affecting banana plantations. Farmers in these talukas said they had suffered losses but were left out of the list due to faulty weather stations and received no assistance.
“Meteorological stations did not record rainfall or some other technical error took us off the drought list; I don’t understand this injustice. Meet anyone, ask anyone in Mudkhed; everyone has a story to tell about crop loss,” said Vilas Mugat, 40, a banana and soybean farmer from Mudkhed taluka in Nanded. Vilas suffered from a banana crop failure for two consecutive years. The June 2025 crop, which was supposed to be harvested in August 2026, could not withstand the extreme temperatures and was overripe, while the crop sown in June 2026 began to dry up because his well has no water.
Vilas used eight acres of his land for banana cultivation with an investment of ₹5,000. “I expect at least ₹ 10-12 crore in revenue for both the years,” Vilas said. Similarly, Balaji Kusumwad (40) of Shemboli village of Mukhed taluka in Nanded has sown soybeans on 3.5 acres of his land with an investment of ₹45,000 per acre. “How did they record 95% rain when the whole of August and September was a dry season? That’s when soybeans start flowering, but the lack of rainfall has disappointed our crop,” Balaji said.
Mukhed and Mudkhed are two taluks in the 16 taluks of Nanded district that were excluded from the list of dry taluks in a Government Resolution (GR) issued last week declaring drought and imposing Trigger-1 in 265 taluks out of the total 358 taluks in the entire state. GR facilitates relief to 74 out of 76 taluks in Marathwada affected by drought. Currently, Nanded has a cultivated land area of 4.25 lakh hectares.
The rainfall recorded in June, July and August was 93.3% in Mukhed and 111.9% in Mudkhed; September recorded 63.1 in Mudkhed and 63.5% in Mukhed. From June to September 30, Mudkhed recorded 94.2% rainfall and Mukhed 86.6%. The two taluks were excluded on two technical points: one is a rainfall deviation of over 20% and a three-week dry spell according to the Nanded Collector Office.
“Mudkhed and Mukhed could not meet these criteria. In July, the average rainfall was 120%, while in August it was 40%; in September it was none. This uneven distribution of rainfall caused this problem. Besides, these taluks received meager rainfall of 3mm or 4mm in between, which broke the cycle of three weeks,” said Karend Rahul District Collectordil.
Mr. Kardile also pointed out that despite these technicalities, the sub-committee in these regions will be reporting the basic truth.
Credit situation
Pankaj Adkine (44), a banana farmer who lives in Hingoli district, adjacent to Nanded, says farmers are in a deep trap as the loan waiver is yet to be resolved and farmers have already taken huge loans from private lenders as banks have refused to lend.
“With a ruined banana this season, I am in a position to repay loans that charge hefty interest. For example, a bank charges ₹ 8,000 interest for a ₹ 1,000 loan; the same private lender will charge ₹ 30,000. I am worried about how to pay ₹ 0,000.
Pankaj’s relatives stay in Mukhed. He says, “Government help doesn’t look promising as we saw with the severe flash floods last year, but at least we have hope of getting some help. My cousin in Mukhed is disappointed with the liberation of his taluka. He has similar loans to pay.”
“When people come for panchnamas, they demand some commission even if the area has been declared drought-affected. If they come for truthfulness and portrayal, one can imagine the level of transactions that could happen,” said Sandipkumar Deshmukh Baradkar, adding that the existing provisions of Article 371(2) for Marathwada must be effectively implemented.
Mr. Deshmukh raised questions about the reported 94% rainfall recorded in Mudkhed taluka and asked why automatic weather stations were not checked and demanded inspection of automatic weather stations from the administration in April 2026.
