Farewell to IPL comeback? MS Dhoni trains ahead of CSK vs SRH, sparks are buzzing
MS Dhoni is once again at the center of massive anticipation as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) prepare for their final home match of IPL 2026 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 18 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, with speculation growing over whether the franchise legend will finally take the field this season.
On Sunday, a day before the Hyderabad match, Dhoni was seen practicing hard in the nets. The session was held once more raised hopes among fans that they would see him at Chepaukwhich could be his last appearance in front of the home crowd in his legendary IPL career. If Dhoni is playing, it goes without saying that Chepauk will be absolutely crazy.
Dhoni has not played a single match in IPL 2026 so far due to the lingering calf injury he sustained during the pre-season which has kept him out of all of ČSK’s matches this year. The injury severely limited his involvement in matchday squads, although he remained closely linked to the squad throughout the campaign.
MS DHONI’s hard training session WITH CSK
Despite his absence from competitive events, Dhoni has been training with the CSK team, taking part in controlled net sessions and fitness work. However, he did not travel with the team to most away games he was not present in the stadiums during the matchesa pattern that has fueled further speculation about his availability and long-term future in the IPL.
The upcoming clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad carries an added emotional weight as it is CSK’s last home game of the season at the venue where Dhoni has built an iconic legacy over nearly two decades. Chepauk has long been considered his stronghold and the possibility of his return, even if only briefly, has caused a wave of excitement among fans.
CSK’s season has been inconsistent and with play-off qualification still in doubt, the management is believed to be considering whether experience and leadership in high-pressure moments could justify Dhoni’s return to the playing XI. Currently, CSK is keeping quiet about Dhoni’s selection status.
The Super Kings started their campaign with three defeats on the trot but remained among the contenders for a top four spot. They are currently sixth in the standings with 12 points and a +0.207 net pace, having won six of their 12 games so far.
