The 2025 Formula 1 season is heading for a blockbuster season as the championship reaches its final stop at the Yas Marina Circuit. With three drivers still in mathematical contention – Lando Norris, Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri – the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix promises a title battle of rare intensity. A season full of breakthroughs, strategic gambles and breakthrough performances will now be narrowed down to 58 decisive rounds under the spotlight.
It’s the closest McLaren have come to a title in more than a decade. Norris has built his campaign on remarkable consistency, while Piastri has developed into a formidable challenger who will match his team-mate blow-for-blow. However, Verstappen remains the most seasoned candidate for the title decider. Despite a bumpy year, his experience and race management make him a dangerous presence up front.
Qualifying offered the perfect prelude to Sunday’s drama. Verstappen exploded to pole with a blistering 1:22.207, he avoided both McLarens in the final runs of Q3. Oscar Piastri was sharp at the start of qualifying and George Russell topped Q2, but Verstappen saved the best for last – overshadowed by his reaction on the radio: “That was crazy.” It was his eighth pole position of the season, setting up an electric three-way championship showdown.
With razor-thin margins and high stakes, Abu Dhabi is preparing to host a career-defining final.
