Electricity bills to go up by 10% in UP from June, govt says fuel price surcharge | Today’s news

Electricity bills in Uttar Pradesh may go up by 10% in June due to surcharge on increased fuel prices, says UP Power Corporation Limited report.

Revised bills will be issued in the June billing cycle, with consumers having to pay an extra 10% on electricity consumption. The increase is in line with the Indian government’s guidelines and information from the regulatory commission, the statement said.

They said the surcharge is levied to compensate for the increased fuel and power purchase costs incurred by electricity distribution companies. The fuel adjustment charging mechanism allows utilities to recover fluctuations in fuel expenditures and the cost of purchasing energy from consumers.

Here’s what the official announcement says:

“As per the regulation, all additional power purchase and transmission costs incurred in that month are refunded after a three-month delay. This means that the additional costs incurred in March 2026 will be reimbursed to the consumer in June 2026,” Pankaj Saxena, Chief Engineer, Regulatory Affairs Unit (RAU), said in the letter.

“For March 2026, the surcharge has been calculated at 10% under Section 16(4) of the MYT Regulation, 2025. This 10% FPPAS will therefore be added to electricity bills issued in June 2026 and will apply to all categories of consumers,” he said.

In accordance with the regulation, a fuel and power purchase surcharge (FPPAS) must be charged in the nth month for the incremental power purchase and transmission charges paid in n-3. months.”

It was further stated: “The adjustment surcharge for the purchase of fuel and energy (FPPAS) calculated for the month of March 2026, according to the regulation, is to be charged in the month of June 2026.”

“As per clause 16(4) of the MYT Regulation, the chargeable amount is 2025 FPPAS 10% for the month of March 2026, which will be charged in the month of June 2026,” Saxena said, adding that the directive mandates distribution companies to implement the surcharge uniformly for all consumers in accordance with the regulatory framework. “A detailed calculation sheet has also been provided for reference and is to be uploaded on the official website for transparency.

The decision to revise electricity rates comes amid widespread reports of power outages and supply shortages across Uttar Pradesh. These outages, which occur during the peak summer season of high demand, are expected to fuel a backlash from consumers and opposition parties.

Under the new structure, households and commercial businesses will face higher monthly electricity bills, with the specific impact determined by individual consumption levels and tariff categories.

Consumer groups have criticized the timing of the increase, saying it places an unsustainable burden on households already struggling with rising living costs. Many further questioned the legitimacy of the increased charges given the frequency of supply disruptions in several districts.

With the revised billing cycle beginning in June, consumers across the state will begin to feel the financial impact of these changes in the coming weeks.
