Amid turmoil in the Muslim voter base, the Congress government – just weeks away from completing three years – hopes to retain the Davangere South and Bagalkot constituencies, even as the BJP believes it will win both. The election result will be known on Monday.
Congress’s Samarth Mallikarjun is fighting BJP’s T. Srinivas Dasakariappa in Davangere South to retain the seat within his family following the death of his grandfather Shamanur Shivashankarappa, a Congress veteran. Mr. Samarth’s selection caused heartburn among Muslim leaders, creating a ripple within the party.
