Amid the political turmoil over Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant’s remarks on Form 6 used for voter registration, the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Press Information Bureau have come out with a slew of fact-checks.
Following reports of dissent in the commission over changes made to Form 6, the EC in a press release on September 26 claimed that the declaration form attached to Form 6 had been upheld by the apex court.
As the CJI clarified on Monday, “any modification of Form 6 was not approved by us. Let us be clear,” Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was quick to attack the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), saying, “It is now proved beyond any doubt that Gyanesh Kumar changed Form 6 illegally and unilaterally. This is just another proof that his BJP is his criminal and everyone else involved in this crime.” the attack on our democracy will be held accountable.”

However, the EC quickly fact-checked Mr. Gandhi in a post on X. The Commission said the Leader of the Opposition’s post was misleading and claimed that the Special Intensive Review (SIR) order dated 24 June 2025 in Bihar was issued with the unanimous consent of the Commission and was upheld by the Supreme Court in its May 2026 judgment. Further, a press release dated 26 September 2026 categorically stated that the statement attached to form 6 for SIR was upheld by the Supreme Court.
The September 26 press release came into focus when Cockroach Janta Party’s Ashutosh Ranka claimed in a post on X that it was no longer available on the EC website.
The PIB checked it and said, “The press release dated 26 September 2026 is available in the public domain and has not been withdrawn by the Election Commission of India.”
