The protest march led by the Indian Federation of Democratic Youth (Dyfi) Madayi Block Committee against Megu Constructions, a supplier who was entrusted with the construction of a six -lane national highway 66, became violent on Thursday (May 22, 2025).
Activists accused suppliers of non -scientific practices and irregularities in the construction of the highway and reportedly attacked the office of the company in Vilayankode, Pariyaram, around 10:00
The protesters reportedly damaged windows, computers and other equipment after the violent access to the office. Although the Pariyaram police arrived on the scene, they were not able to control the crowd.
The protest comes in the middle of a large public anger over recent incidents related to construction. In Pilathara, the collapse of the border wall along the highway raised security concerns among the inhabitants. At the beginning of this week, the clay wall retreated at the NH construction site in Kuppam in the Taliparamba and sent muddy water to nearby houses.
In response to this, the residents blocked the road on Wednesday (May 21, 2025). Blocakade was temporarily canceled after discussions with an income division officer. However, the inhabitants warned against renewing a strike on May 27, unless any measures were taken.
‘Deficiencies in DPR’
Meanwhile, an independent engineer representing the Indian National Manizer (NHAI) Manoj Kumar, who visited Ch Colony and Kuppam, admitted that there were shortcomings in a detailed project and that it would be corrected.
“There are several shortcomings in the DPR, which include the default values in obtaining land, where to design culverts and where to design space for the underpass,” he pointed out.
In order to alleviate further damage in Ch Colony, Mr. Kumar said that the work on the construction of the culvert temporarily diverted the water flowing from the upper side towards the residential area.
“The water will be directed and diverted from the Kuppam river basin by creating a culvert on the top. This will prevent further flooding of residential areas,” he explained.
