Duolingo CEO Luis von AHN tried to clarify the notes that caused resistance to the beginning of this year after describing the language learning platform as a “and first company”.
Criticism over a shortage of context
When he spoke to The New York Times, von AHN said the reaction stems from the lack of context in his original comments. “It wasn’t controversial internally,” he said. “Outwardly, as a publicly traded society, some people assume it’s just for profit. Or we’re trying to release people. And that wasn’t the intention at all.”
Jobs and suppliers
The CEO pointed out that the company had not performed full -time employees and stated that there were no plans for this. However, he acknowledged the fluctuations in using the company’s suppliers. “From the beginning … the workforce of our supplier has risen and down depending on the needs,” he said.
AI experiments continue
Criticism has not significantly affected the financial performance of Duoling and the company continues to explore AI instruments within its platform. According to von AHN, employees are engaged in technology testing Friday morning and informally dubbed the “Fr-AI-DDDDDDDDDDD-DYS” initiative.
The Business Insider report at the beginning of this year indicated that Luis von AHN considered artificial intelligence to be a power that could fundamentally transform global education.
Von AHN, who spoke of No Prieors podcast with the risk capitalist Sarah Guo, was quoted as said that teaching through AI offers much more scalability than traditional class teaching.
While she stressed that schools would not disappear, the report cited him that their main function could gradually move towards children’s care and supervision than direct learning. “That doesn’t mean the teachers disappear,” he explained. “Children will always need adults to take care of them, and schools will remain necessary to care for children.”
According to the report, he imagined the future where classrooms full of “Duolingo-Ing” students through adapted lessons, while teachers take over more facilitator or mentor role.
