DRDO scientist Gopinath K. takes over as director of DMRL

Eminent materials scientist and defense researcher Gopinath K. has taken over as Director of the Defense Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Hyderabad.

DMRL is the premier Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) laboratory dedicated to developing advanced materials for the Indian defense sector. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Gopinath served as a Distinguished Scientist and Associate Director at DMRL where he led several high priority projects in aerospace materials and key research programmes.

He joined DRDO in 1994 and spent more than three decades contributing to the development of indigenous technologies critical to India’s national security. From 1994 to 2008, he played a key role in the indigenous development of materials and components for the Kaveri engine program, working closely with many industries.

After moving to DMRL in 2008, he focused on the advancement of high temperature materials and specialized marine steels, making significant contributions to the development of critical technologies for India’s naval and aerospace platforms.

An alumnus of some of the country’s premier engineering and research institutions, Mr. Gopinath received his BE degree from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore in 1992, M.Tech. from IIT Kanpur in 1994 and a Ph.D. from IISc-Bengaluru in 2009, a press release said on Wednesday.
