DKS writes to the Prime Minister requesting immediate temporary relief from the drought

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighting the worsening drought situation in Karnataka, with 177 taluks now declared drought-affected and the situation likely to intensify in the coming months.

In light of the grim situation, Mr. Shivakumar sought immediate interim drought relief of 50% of the amount sought in the earlier memorandum of ₹ 3,705.30 crore, pending the completion of the formal evaluation process by the central team. He also sought an early release of the central share of the second installment of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

Mr. Shivakumar said widespread crop losses were predicted in Karnataka, likely to exceed 40 million hectares.

“This support will help Karnataka take immediate measures to help with crop losses, drinking water supply, livestock protection and other necessary interventions,” he said in the letter, noting that the prolonged rainfall deficit is having a serious impact on the rural economy.
