The fishing industry continues to be affected by the fuel crisis caused by tensions in West Asia. Disruption in gas and cooking diesel supplies has hit the sector hard, while a hike in kerosene prices has contributed to the crisis, according to stakeholders.
Fisherfolk operating deep-sea fishing boats that spend several days at sea were on the receiving end due to the lack of commercial LPG cylinders. Around 2,000 people involved in fishing-related work at Thoppumpady harbor were affected as several deep-sea fishing vessels such as seine nets, longlines and trawlers remained idle in the harbour. These ships usually stay at sea for 15-20 days at a time, so cooking gas is essential to prepare food for the crew.
The Kochi Longline Boat and Gillnet Buying Agents Association had earlier compared the situation to that of the hotel industry, which has almost come to a standstill due to the fuel crisis.
